6/30/2023 0 Comments Anthrax mailings timelineOHA lends our expertise to a number of initiatives across the Department that focus on the threat of a biological attack. ![]() Since the anthrax attacks 10 years ago, the Department has made progress in protecting the nation from biological attacks, and preparing the nation to respond to such events. The time between exposure and the administration of medical countermeasures (MCM) is the most critical parameter in determining the extent of how many lives are lost in a biological attack. Even a small scale attack, such as the Amerithrax attacks of a decade ago, will result in deaths, panic, and economic losses, making this a weapon of mass disruption as well as destruction. A successful anthrax attack could potentially expose hundreds of thousands of people, and cause illness, death, fear, societal disruption and economic damage. Additionally, the Quadrennial Homeland Security Review (QHSR) identified high-consequence biological attacks as a priority threat.Ī wide-area attack using aerosolized Bacillus anthracis, the bacteria that causes anthrax, is one of the most serious mass casualty threats facing the U.S. As you know, the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Commission reported that we must be vigilant in addressing several urgent threats, especially bioterrorism. The threat of a biological attack is real and challenging. OHA also serves as the primary DHS point of contact for state and local governments on medical and public health issues. OHA's responsibilities include serving as the principal advisor to the Secretary and FEMA Administrator on medical and public health issues coordinating DHS biological defense programs providing medical expertise to support DHS preparedness and response efforts and leading the Department's workforce health protection and medical support activities. We look at health through the prism of national security, providing medical, public health, and scientific expertise in support of the DHS mission to prepare for, respond to, and recover from all threats. OHA serves as DHS's principal authority for all medical and health issues. I would like to begin by providing an overview of OHA and our role within the Homeland Security Enterprise. I welcome this opportunity to discuss how the Office of Health Affairs (OHA) contributes to this effort. Secretary Napolitano highlighted a number of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) activities related to efforts to prepare for and protect against biological attacks in the 2011 Progress Report reviewing DHS and partner efforts to build a country that is stronger, safer and more resilient. These are clear exam- ples of how an unconventional explosive device (such as a plane) can be used as a large scale WMPD. The Oklahoma City bombing, the Pentagon attack, and the 9/11 bombing of the New York Twin Towers involved airplanes as explosive devices rather than just a CBRN agent. Does the act involve an explosive device? The “E” for explosives has been added to the FBI’s understanding and definition of a WMD. Did the act or event involve a firearm(s)? Earlier in this chapter an introduction to the use of firearms as a WMPD, with the Fort Hood shooting as an example, was provided. Terrorist attacks (or the threat of an attack) using a CBRN substance have been well documented in the last few decades. Is a chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) agent used? Most com- monly and perhaps easier to understand and view an act as a WMPD would be the attacks that involve CBRN agents. The act of beheading a young mother will cause great psychological harm to anyone viewing this evil act of terror. ![]() Does the killing or act involve women, children, or the elderly? Terrorists are cognizant of the fact that the killing or harming of children, women, or the elderly increases the effect and psychological impact of their terrorist actions. ![]() Is the act of terror public? A common goal of terrorists is for the killing, physical or destruction, to be very public and for the news sources to broadcast the event over and over to a nation to inflict psychological harm. 6/30/2023 0 Comments Corona photosphere chromosphere![]() ![]() Which elementĪbsorption lines are present and their strength Layters, so you see absorption lines in the solar spectrum. Engaging in the practices of engineering likewise helps students understand the work of engineers, as well as the links between engineering and science. In other cases, however, they are considered separately.Įngaging in the practices of science helps students understand how scientific knowledge develops such direct involvement gives them an appreciation of the wide range of approaches that are used to investigate, model, and explain the world. In many cases, the practices in the two fields are similar enough that they can be discussed together. Throughout the discussion, we consider practices both of science and engineering. Such understanding will help students become more critical consumers of scientific information.ġ. Finally, we conclude that acquiring skills in these practices supports a better understanding of how scientific knowledge is produced and how engineering solutions are developed. Second, we describe in detail eight practices we consider essential for learning science and engineering in grades K-12 (see Box 3-1). In the chapter’s three major sections, we first articulate why the learning of science and engineering practices is important for K-12 students and why these practices should reflect those of professional scientists and engineers. As previously noted, we use the term “practices,” instead of a term such as “skills,” to stress that engaging in scientific inquiry requires coordination both of knowledge and skill simultaneously. This chapter stresses the importance of developing students’ knowledge of how science and engineering achieve their ends while also strengthening their competency with related practices. A narrow focus on content alone has the unfortunate consequence of leaving students with naive conceptions of the nature of scientific inquiry and the impression that science is simply a body of isolated facts. There has always been a tension, however, between the emphasis that should be placed on developing knowledge of the content of science and the emphasis placed on scientific practices. From its inception, one of the principal goals of science education has been to cultivate students’ scientific habits of mind, develop their capability to engage in scientific inquiry, and teach them how to reason in a scientific context. 6/30/2023 0 Comments Garmin express for windows 10![]() This site isn’t directly connected with “garmin”. The band has gone on maybe one tour, and they sound like they’ve been touring for a decade,” Pemberton says. “Tribal Gaze deserves everyone’s time and attention. That leads to more people wanting to start bands, which in part leads to the boom in bands you see today.”Ī staggering number of the musicians who contributed to this guide reserved their highest praise for Tribal Gaze, a fresh-faced unit out of Longview who just released their debut album, The Nine Choirs, last year. “I think there’s been an increase of interest in death metal not just in Texas, but on a macro level across fans of heavy music in general. “A difference I do notice from then to now are the amount of people participating,” he continues. You’d always make it a point to catch a Cleric set, and Mammoth Grinder from Austin was producing some of the best riffs in the state.” “When I was 18, 19, and predominantly going to hardcore shows in DFW, bands like End Times and HUMANERROR were local favorites in that scene. “In my opinion, there’s been great death metal and death metal-influenced bands coming out of Texas well before we started,” Pemberton says. (Its first single, “Intestinal Wrap,” features guest vocals from death metal godfather George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher of Cannibal Corpse.) Despite having seniority in the current scene, guitarist Trey Pemberton stresses that Texas has been delivering the big riffs for years. Like Frozen Soul, Creeping Death have a new record out this summer- Boundless Domain drops in June. Their punishing, hardcore-infused take on death metal is a perfect fit for a scene that tends to eschew rigid genre lines, and the mosh pits opened by their razor-sharp songs are lethal. “I wanted to get together with people that I knew he cared about, and that cared about him, and just do a sort of a Texas tribute to Cory,” Green says.ĭenton’s Creeping Death started a few years before Frozen Soul, but their rise to the top of the Texas heap has happened in near parallel. ![]() It also includes a moving tribute to Green's late brother, Cory, on "Arsenal of War," featuring guest vocals from his other brother, Josh, and appearances by members of Creeping Death and Fugitive. Glacial Domination takes everything Crypt of Ice did well and does it better, with more intricate (but still bludgeoning) guitar work and a new flush of samples and synth parts. “Everybody gets cold, whether it’s physically or mentally,” Green says. Green spins deceptively complex metaphors, using frostbitten imagery to investigate personal traumas and mental health issues. They’re not just singing about the weather, though. In May, the band will return with Glacial Domination, stepping up their game as songwriters and performers while returning to the same (frozen) lyrical well. It shuts the grid off, all right?”įrozen Soul started in Fort Worth in 2018, and they quickly distinguished themselves not only with their menacing, groovy riffs, but with their seemingly paradoxical lyrical fixation, which is all over their aptly titled 2021 debut, Crypt of Ice. “And it shuts the whole fucking state down. “For all the haters out there, we got ice in Texas,” Chad Green laughs. At events like Denton’s Texas Death Fest and Dallas’ Wrecking Ball Metal Madness, bands in the scene show out, delivering chugging riffs, pounding drums, and guttural vocals to rooms full of adoring (and, frequently, quite young) headbangers. One such community can be found in Texas, which might boast the strongest death metal scene in the world right now. The same thing is happening today, with hometown heroes building their own musical communities and making their mark on the death metal map. In death metal’s early days, distinctive regional scenes emerged, as epicenters in Florida, New York, and Sweden developed their own idiosyncrasies and signature sounds. But the underground that it calls home has grown larger and more accommodating. ![]() Death metal is still fundamentally underground music.
